(COLUMBIA) – Jim Rex is the strongest candidate for Governor among the Democratic contenders, according to a poll conducted and released this weekend by Rasmussen Reports, an electronic media company specializing in the collection, publication, and distribution of public opinion polling information. The poll shows Rex beating Lieutenant Governor Andre Bauer and running competitively alongside Congressman Gresham Barrett and Attorney General Henry McMaster. Rex’s closest competitor among the Democrats, State Senator Vincent Sheheen, trails all Republicans significantly.
“Jim Rex maintains his front-runner status among the Democrats in the race for Governor, and it’s obvious why. He’s the only Democrat that can win next November,” said campaign director Zeke Stokes.
The survey, conducted December 2, 2009, shows Rex maintaining significant momentum. Against McMaster, Rex wins 32 percent to his 39 percent. Six points separate Barrett and Rex, with the candidates at 39 and 33 percent respectively. Rex beats Bauer, 36 percent to 35 percent.
Against Sheheen, Republicans fare much better. Barrett beats him two-to-one, 46 to 23 percent, and McMaster holds a strong lead in a two-way match up with 43 percent of the vote to Sheheen’s 26 percent. Sheheen also loses to Bauer by double digits, 39 percent to 29 percent.
“This poll continues to show us that Democrats are excited by Jim Rex’s grassroots campaign built around education, jobs and quality of life. We have long believed that the right Democrat with the right plan for South Carolina can win. This poll confirms that Jim Rex is that candidate,” said Stokes.
The poll was conducted among 500 likely general election voters and has a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percent. For additional details, go to www.rasmussenreports.com.
