Dinner at Mariachi’s in Lancaster, SC

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

A sizable group of women joined me for a dinner meeting in Lancaster at Mariachis.  Between servings, we got down to business. Key topics included transportation assistance from rural parts of the state to the nearest cities – for jobs, services, health care. An extension of the transportation discussion related to providing quality daycare settings statewide with a focus on giving pre-schoolers a leg up toward kindergarten. Other issues discussed:

  • Early childhood education for all “at risk” children
  • Public education and declining funding
  • Discrepancy between men and women in pay

Our conversation turned to jobs which included both helping women get small businesses started and retooling for women who are attempting to change careers.

At the Table Lunch in McCormick, SC – May 10th

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

What a great gathering! Lunch was at Fannie Kate’s and the conversation rivaled the meal.  We started out talking about the limited role women have in South Carolina politics – 50th in the nation regarding women in our legislature.

I took notes throughout the meeting, promising to help Jim understand the discussions and build them into his plans as the state’s next governor.

Our group was especially interested in helping women start small businesses, the foundation of the economy, especially in smaller, rural South Carolina towns. Are there micro-loans available for these women? Or should there be? Another great idea to add to the future governor’s agenda!

At the Table on May 5 – Sun City/Bluffton

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

This time our “At the Table” session was very political. Women gathered at the home of Sue Yearwood and wanted to talk with me and each other about other women running for office and having a voice at the decision-making table. Issues raised included:

  • Helping women to raise money and votes for upcoming elections;
  • Electing more women to boards and commissions;
  • Persuading more women to become involved in the political process.

Not to miss issues related to health and wellness, we closed our get together by talking about the need for more bike trails and walking trails for families.

Gubernatorial campaign gets woman’s touch

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

Posted originally in the People Sentinel.
By Susan Delk – Staff Writer

Even though voters recently chose local school board candidates, issues with county schools are still on the minds of some voters as they look forward to the gubernatorial primary elections.

Those issues are also on one gubernatorial candidate’s mind.

Jim Rex, the state’s Superintendent of Education, has thrown his hat into the ring of competitors for the state’s highest office.

Sue Rex is campaigning across the state for her husband through small lunches that target women and the issues important to them.

“I’m here to have a conversation with you,” Sue Rex said. “He’s (Jim Rex) asked me to go around the state and meet with women to see what issues affect them.”

Rex visited Miller’s Bread Basket in Blackville, April 16 to hold a local luncheon.

Although the topics of conversation ranged from issues in the new industries to litter along the county roadways, the main issue discussed was the public schools in the county.

Bet Benson asked what Jim Rex thought of equitable funding for school districts.

“This is one of the major reasons Jim is running for governor,” Sue Rex said.

In the next fiscal year, schools will be back to the level of funding they received in 1995 and Jim has several ideas to raise revenue, Sue Rex said.

One of the ideas is to raise the state cigarette tax to the national average, which would generate $250 million extra dollars, she said.

He would then like to put half of those funds into education, she said.

“He wants to see the same amount of money for each child no matter what their district,” she said of the equitable funding proposal.

Dr. Teresa Pope, superintendent of the Blackville-Hilda School district said even then – schools would not get equal funding.

Pope said some districts have local industries that create a tax base to help schools.

Sue Rex said her husband also wants to bring additional industries to rural areas to increase that local tax base.

Rex said her husband also would like share the tax base of large industries across the state with all counties so that everyone can benefit.

“We can’t have islands of prosperity while we are sinking elsewhere,” she said.

She said Rex would also start a marketing plan for South Carolina to attract industry.

Lynn Cox, the community and tourism director for the city of Barnwell asked about behavior problems in schools.

Rex said her husband would like to build on skills teachers already have by providing additional training on discipline issues as well as have them work in teams to teach students.

“When first-year teachers come on board, they can learn from master teachers in the team,” she said.

AT THE TABLE with Sue Rex in Blackville, SC

Friday, April 16th, 2010

At The Table with Sue Rex in Barnwell, SC

At The Table with Sue Rex in Blackville, SC

Yesterday was a beautiful day…great food, and 13 women with one thing on their minds…how to make South Carolina a better place to live, work, and raise a family. The women opened up easily to Sue Rex, as she listened attentively and responded with thoughtfulness and genuine concern. Sue shared with the group Jim Rex’s ideas and plans for re-shaping the image of South Carolina. As governor, Jim will help to develop a marketing plan that will put the focus on the beauty of the state and the wonderful people here.

Other topics of discussion ranged from student discipline and overwhelmed teachers, to increasing preventive healthcare and rejuvenating our roadsides. Bett Benson asked about equal funding for all districts. Sue explained that Dr. Rex clearly sees inequalities and plans on comprehensive tax reform and a distribution of the same amount of funding regardless of zip code. Sue stated, “We can’t have islands of prosperity, while we are sinking everywhere else.”

Karen Zeigler brought up her concerns about childhood obesity and attitudes towards healthy foods. Sue pointed out that our schools are not using products from South Carolina and Jim is researching a way to use crops grown by South Carolina farmers specifically for our schools. He is also looking into low calorie, nutritious snacks for vending machines to be placed in schools.

Marie Davis suggested that when Dr. Rex becomes our next governor, he should set aside one day per month to meet with the public. Anyone wanting to visit him at his office , could share their concerns or address an issue in person. Making him more accessible and in touch with the people would be a great stride toward re-building trust in our government.

Overall, the discussion was a great success! The women left feeling they had been heard and also believing that Sue and Jim Rex care about each and every community in the state.

At the Table Tour Kickoff

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Sue’s Blog

On Monday, I was privileged to meet with a diverse group of women in the Midlands as I kicked off a statewide tour called, “At the Table.”  This tour is an opportunity to speak with women and listen to their concerns and perspectives on a wide array of issues. The discussion ranged from the need to get more women elected to public office at all levels, as well as the under-representation of women on boards and commissions. Of course, we also talked about health care, education, and lots of other things that affect women and their families.

A special thanks to Ashley Byrd from the SC Radio Network for covering the event!  I’m looking forward to taking the tour to Barnwell on Thursday, April 15th.
